Chukka 1.

Johny Sumption doubled up with Lolly Stanhope-White for Knowle. The conditions were very hot, the thermometer touching over 80 F! Horner started with a half goal handicap start which was, quite quickly eliminated with a penalty being awarded to Knowle, after a cross in the goal mouth, and Glen Armstrong, from New Zealand, made no mistakes in taking it and the score was Horner ½ Knowle 1. After the line up the ball was taken, again, towards Horner goal area and a good backhander from Roger Float was picked up by Lolly Stanhope-White and she put the ball between the posts making the score Horner ½ Knowle 2. At the roll in, the whistles went almost immediately and a penalty from the centre was awarded to Knowle and Glen Armstrong took the ball up the ground for Knowle but was met with some hefty defence and hard riding off. Glen was forced to take a big under the neck shot, having been pushed away from the Horner goal with some good defensive polo, and scored making the score Horner ½ Knowle 3. Again, from the line up the whistles went as both umpires both spotted some odd activity and this time Horner got the penalty from the centre which was taken by Brook Bishop. In spite of the powerful hitting ability of Brook, he was unable to score and the ball was picked up, by Knowle and hit back towards the Horner half of the ground. In the melee right in front of the Horner goal, a foul was seen and Knowle was awarded a spot hit, which was about ten feet from the line, and Glen Armstrong gently tapped the ball over making the score Horner ½ Knowle 4. As the chukka progressed a 30 yarder was awarded to Horner, taken by Brook Bishop but the ball spun slightly to the left and went over the back line. The bell and whistles went and the first exciting chukka finished with the score Horner ½ Knowle 4.

Chukka 2.

The first chukka finishing on a foul, a hot from the centre was awarded to Horner and Brook Bishop very slowly cantered up the middle of the ground showing good ball control and his team riding shotgun, he succeeded and getting the ball between the posts making the score Horner 1.5/Knowle 4. From the centre Knowle took the ball towards the Horner goal but hit it wide. Brook Bishop took the hit in but decided to dribble the ball, which was taken off the end of his stick by Glen Armstrong, for Knowle, who popped it between the posts making the score Horner 1.5/Knowle 5. The ball was thrown in at the centre and was taken away by Kevin Lamacraft for Knowle but some “full on” riding off from Kevin Greenleaves pushed Kevin Lamacraft off the ball but Glen Armstrong was following behind this tussle and powerfully hit the ball between the posts for Knowle’s 6th goal to Horner’s 1.5.With no further goals being scored leading up to half time the chukka finished with the score Horner 1.5/Knowle 6

Chukka 3.

The hot conditions took their toll and the umpires had to keep their wits about them and asked both teams to calm down. As a result there was a roll in about 60 yards out from the Knowle goal and Brook Bishop with good stick work scored for Horner making the score Horner 2.5/Knowle 6. Again, from the centre line up the whistle went virtually straight away, after the ball left the umpires hand, and a centre hit was awarded to Knowle. From that penalty, the ball was taken up the grounds by a combination of Kevin Lamacraft and Glen Armstrong and some good stick work from the Horner team prevented these two from scoring immediately and Lolly Stanhope-White got a good clearing backhander but was unlucky to have it hit a ponies hoof and spinning straight to Glen Armstrong who whacked it between the posts moving the score to Horner 2.5/Knowle 7. With the teams receiving the centre roll in, some fast galloping polo followed and the whistles went and as a result Knowle was in receipt of a hit from the centre but they could not do anything with it and the chukka finished with the score Horner 2.5/Knowle 7.

Chukka 4

The previous chukka ended on a whistle and yet another hit from the centre was awarded to Horner and taken by Brook Bishop who took the ball down the ground at a lick; Glen Armstrong had to move quickly to hook Brooks stick and the ball spun out over the back line. From the hit in, the game galloped up and down the pitch with Horner putting pressure on the Knowle defence which was up to the mark but the whistles went and a 40 yarder was given to Horner which Brook Bishop converted making the score Horner 3.5/Knowle 7. With both teams keeping a tight grip on each other the polo unfolded in front of a good crowd and Knowle’s Kevin Lamacraft added to the Knowle score with another goal making the score Horner 3.5/Knowle 8. With no further goals the match ended with Knowle being the winners of the Polo Managers Choice tournament with Knowle 8/Horner 3.5.
